Macleod Dixon, One of top 3 Crown Agents in 2007-2008

The Lawyers Weekly
September 5, 2008

Although the government of Canada spent nearly 50 percent less than the previous year on civil litigation conducted by crown agents, Macleod Dixon remained near the top of the Department of Justice's list of crown agents. The firm is defending the Crown in a law suit filed by three Alberta Indian bands who contend the Crown mismanaged their oil and gas revenues. This multi-billion dollar breach of treaty and fiduciary duty law suit was launched in 1989 and did not conclude until 2004.

Clarke Hunter, a senior partner at Macleod Dixon made his first ever appeal at the Supreme Court during this case. "It was nice to go," Hunter reflects. "I enjoyed it."

In the article, according to Hunter, "the firm spent 2007-08 working on the case - five lawyers with the additional help of students and paralegals worked on assembling the extensive record for the Supreme Court."

The case may already be the longest-running piece of domestic litigation in Canadian history.
