International Law

Our professionals provide seamless legal service in regions throughout the world in which our clients operate - regardless of borders or geography. Members of our group have experience working in the former Soviet Union and South and Central America, as well as in Eastern Europe, the Far East, the Indian subcontinent, Africa and the Caribbean.

We advise clients on a broad range of sophisticated transactions and legal matters, from government and public relations issues to highly complex international mining and oil and gas transactions. We service renewable and non-renewable resource industries, major lending organizations and companies involved in industrial and natural resource projects. We assist foreign companies entering Canada, as well as Canadian companies expanding into foreign markets.

International transactions require an understanding of local laws and business practices, in addition to technical, business and linguistic skills. Macleod Dixon lawyers have proven expertise operating in diverse and challenging legal environments, including countries with emerging and newly emerging economies.

We are highly skilled in dealing with autonomous republics, local administrations and officials. Our on-the-ground experience has proven a valuable asset in negotiating a comprehensive range of business transactions and helping clients navigate complex national, regional and local laws. Our expertise and capability in both the common and civil law systems greatly enhances our ability to carry out large multi-jurisdictional transactions.

In addition, our lawyers are able to draw on the talents and experience of lawyers in the firm’s other offices and practice groups to provide clients with seamless service in Canada and across international borders.

International Offices

With the opening of our Moscow office in 1990, Macleod Dixon became one of the first international law firms to be accredited in the former Soviet Union.

When we opened an office in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 1995, we became the first Canadian law firm to be accredited by the Republic of Kazakhstan. We have since expanded our services in this region and opened a second Kazakhstan office in Atyrau in the Caspian Region.

In 1997 we opened an office in Caracas, Venezuela, becoming the first Canadian law firm to establish a fully staffed office in Latin America. With the opening of our office in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, we became the first foreign law firm registered in compliance with Brazilian law.

Today, our firm provides a vital link for many Canadian businesses seeking to operate in these countries.
