Judson E. Virtue
Prior to joining Macleod Dixon LLP in 1996, Jud was litigation counsel with Canadian Pacific Limited and its affiliates in the railway, hotel, energy and real estate industries. Since joining Macleod Dixon LLP, Jud has continued to provide litigation and trial counsel services to major corporate clients, including clients in the hospitality and sport industries.
Jud is an experienced corporate trial lawyer. His expertise includes federal and provincial regimes and defending court challenges of regulatory decisions and approvals. He has represented clients in trials and hearings at all levels of Alberta Courts, Federal Courts and Regulatory Tribunals.
Jud became a partner of Macleod Dixon LLP in February 1999.

Property and Tax Litigation
- Prosecuting property tax appeals on behalf of owners and managers of commercial office towers, hotels, shopping complexes and industrial facilities.
Environmental Litigation
- Defending against a class action suit alleging environmental contamination of several hundred residential and corporate properties in Calgary;
- Defending a claim in Federal Court seeking to overturn approval of a major expansion of a landmark hotel property in Banff National Park;
- Defending a claim in Federal Court seeking to set aside a water access permit for a significant hotel property in Banff National Park;
- Defending litigation to set aside approval of a ski hill expansion, including ski lifts, hotels and multi-family residences;
- Defending a claim by a Native Band to set aside approval of a major resort hotel development on lands subject to an Indian Land Claim;
- Representing a sport governing body in an appeal hearing brought by a player cut from the Olympic team;
- Representing a major international corporation against an environmental class action;
- Prosecuting an environmental contamination claim on behalf of the owner of 3 sections of industrial lands in Calgary; and
- Representing a shopping mall owner in an environmental contamination claim against a former dry cleaner tenant.
Intellectual Property Litigation
- Obtaining urgent injunctive relief and Anton Pillar Orders in several corporate espionage cases involving theft of intellectual property;
- Representing a sport trademark owner in a claims against newspapers and retailers for trademark infringement in congratulatory advertising;
- Representing trademark owners in passing off and trade mark infringement claims and obtaining injunctive relief against manufacturers, distributors and retailers of counterfeit product;
- Representing a major Canadian sport organization in a license and trademark infringement claim and obtaining injunctive relief against an internet based retailer of sport memorabilia;
- Representing a sport organization in a claim against a major Canadian newspaper for trademark infringement in congratulatory advertising; and
- Prosecuting a claim in Alberta Court for breach of a multi-million dollar software product development and supply contract.
