Macleod Dixon E.L.P.

The Moscow practice is widely recognized for offering highly professional legal services and for occupying a leading position in the Russian market as a mining and energy law firm.  In the last year, the Moscow office has added a number of the world’s leading players in these areas to its client portfolio. The office also has established expertise in mergers and acquisitions, which has received particular praise in Chambers Global 2007. In addition, the Moscow office is expanding into new practice areas such as the rapidly growing capital markets, securities, and banking and finance sectors. Macleod Dixon’s Moscow lawyers are also specialists in corporate and commercial, international trade policy, real estate, telecommunications and taxation and customs law.

Since 1990, when our Moscow office became the second law firm worldwide to be accredited in the former Soviet Union, the number of staff has gradually increased to 40, including 19 professionals headed by a team of three partners. Anatoly Andriash, the Managing Partner and fellow partners Levon Kocharyan and Aydin Jebrailov, consistently receive high rankings in major legal directories in recognition of their accomplishments as leading practitioners in their respective fields of specialization which include mining, energy, project development and finance.

Russia today presents attractive investment opportunities as well as challenges. Having recently overtaken Saudi Arabia to become the world’s leading oil producer, and holding as much as half of the world’s potential coal reserves, Russia is witnessing an economic boom at a time of record energy prices. The Moscow office works with clients to demonstrate that, with the correct legal representation, clients can turn such opportunities into profits. The firm’s clients include global conglomerates, multinational joint ventures, medium-sized entrepreneurial growth companies, and private individuals.

Over the course of many transactions, the office has developed excellent working relationships with the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Federal Agency on Subsoil Use, the Ministry of Fuel and Energy, and Russian banking institutions. In addition, we assisted in the founding of the Mining Advisory Council, which the firm chairs four times a year - further testament to our special relationship with the mining industry and our exceptional positioning in the marketplace.

Macleod Dixon’s Moscow office is proud to have represented clients in high-profile, industry-leading transactions. Recent examples of our work  include the US$3.4 billion merger of Bema Gold Corporation with Kinross Gold Corporation, and the sale of an oil and gas deposit with a current market value of over US$1 billion. Macleod Dixon regularly provides comment to the Russian government on proposed legislation and regulations and the firm's professionals speak at major conferences dedicated to energy and natural resource issues in Russia, Europe, Asia and North America.

When retained to work on multi-jurisdictional projects, the Moscow office has not only the necessary in-depth experience to provide counsel on matters involving Russian law, but also has highly qualified professionals, not based in Moscow, such as Glenn Faass and Rujuta Patel to represent clients in transactions governed by English law.
