J. Raymond Chartier
As a member of the firm's civil litigation group, Ray's practice focuses on aboriginal and treaty rights litigation, commercial disputes within the oil and gas industry and regulatory issues. Ray has extensive experience dealing with claims involving aboriginal and treaty issues regarding the development, regulation and management of oil and gas interests in Alberta, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. He also regularly advises clients on a variety of different constitutional issues, including on matters involving aboriginal consultation issues in both regulatory and project development contexts. He has been involved in lengthy and complex litigation before the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench.
Prior to joining Macleod Dixon in 1999, Ray had a general civil litigation practice in Calgary. He also spent time working as a consultant within the energy industry, where he advised clients on projects involving acquisitions, dispositions and swaps of various oil and gas properties and assets throughout western Canada. Ray has also provided advice on due diligence and title review issues, and on matters involving contractual interpretation.
