Joel S. Friley
Joel’s practice encompasses a wide range of domestic and international project development and finance transactions, corporate finance and technology transactions, and commercial finance matters. He has been lead counsel on numerous transactions throughout Canada and the United States, including significant cross-border matters. He has also led international transactions in Latin America and the European Community. Joel advises on transactions governed by New York law and California law, in addition to those governed by Alberta law.
In the project development and finance area, Joel has represented developers, banks, institutional lenders, governmental agencies, industrial hosts and equity investors in connection with the acquisition, development, financing and restructuring of domestic and international energy and infrastructure projects, including greenfield projects and power projects involving merchant risk. Joel's experience with energy projects includes all major energy sources (gas, coal, waste coal, biomass, wood waste, geothermal, wind, solar and heavy oil).
Joel's corporate finance practice includes acquisitions, mergers, joint ventures, equity investments, restructurings and recapitalizations. Joel has significant expertise in acquisitions and other commercial transactions in the technology and intellectual property areas, including cross-border acquisitions of technology companies.
Joel also has extensive experience in commercial finance matters, representing major commercial lenders, bank syndicates, institutional investors and borrowers in connection with credit-enhanced transactions, structured financings, acquisition and asset-based financings, secondary mortgage market financings, trade finance matters, public financings and workouts.
