Marianne Wagener
Director
Marianne Wagener is a director in the Commercial Department of the Johannesburg office of the firm. Marianne joined the firm in 2006 and specialises in competition law.
Marianne focuses on cartel investigations and other complaints about horizontal and vertical anticompetitive practices as well as abuses of a dominant position. Marianne has recently assisted clients in the South African mining, financial services, information technology, agriculture and construction industries.
She also has extensive experience with competition law opinions and merger notifications, including the attempted hostile takeover by BHP Billiton of Rio Tinto and the acquisition of the AandE businesses of ICI by Henkel KGAA. She regularly assists clients with competition law compliance audits, information sharing queries and training programs, as well as dawn raids and subsequent search and seizure litigation.
Marianne advises clients such as Rand Merchant Bank, Bayer and AfriSam on an ongoing basis on competition law.
Marianne is a regular conference speaker and contributor of articles on competition law and related issues. She regularly comments on competition law issues on radio, and television.
She obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree (majoring in Law) and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Stellenbosch, graduating in the top three students of her class. She also recently obtained her Masters degree in Commercial Law from the University of South Africa, cum laude. Marianne was awarded the prize for the student who performed best in Patent Law, Copyright Law, Law of Trade Marks or Competition Law for her academic achievement in the Competition Law course that formed part of her Masters degree.
She is an admitted attorney and a member of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces.
